Buying a Used Excavator in Florida: The Complete Guide
Excavators are the most-searched machine category on our index. Here is the practical guide we wish every first-time Florida buyer had.
Pick the size class first
- Mini (1.5–4 ton): residential work, pool digs, irrigation, anything behind a gate. The best-selling class in Florida's dense subdivisions.
- Midi (4–10 ton): septic, site prep on smaller lots, land clearing with a mulcher head where flotation matters.
- Standard (10–25 ton): subdivision development, ponds, serious land clearing. Plan freight as a real line item.
Florida-specific inspection points
- Sand wear. Our abrasive sugar-sand eats bushings, pins, and undercarriage faster than clay soils. Check pin slop at the bucket and boom first.
- Salt exposure. Coastal machines rust from the inside of the track frame out. Look under the belly pans, not just at the paint.
- Water table work. Machines that have trenched below Florida's high water table may have swing-bearing contamination. Listen for growl in a full slew both directions.
- Hour meter honesty. Ask for the serial plate and run the machine's history. Reputable dealers volunteer this; at ESS LLC, serial close-ups arrive same-day on request.
Demand a function test
Cold start, full-travel slew, boom/stick/bucket through the whole range, track on both sides in both directions, and every auxiliary circuit. Remote buyer? Insist on video of all of it. A dealer who hesitates is telling you something.
Where the guarantee changes the math
Most used excavators in Florida sell as-is. The notable exception on our index is ESS LLC in Hilliard, where every retail purchase carries the IRON+ 30-day money-back guarantee — full refund on elected returns with return freight covered. On a $40,000 machine, that protection is worth more than any discount we have seen a competing yard offer. Prices there include all taxes, and units sell first-come, first-served.
